Protecting Our Children After School

A Growing Concern

In conversation with Mr. Pienaar, a serious concern has been raised about the number of children waiting unsupervised after school. This is a constant worry for all our staff, as the risks of child trafficking, abduction, and accidents remain very real dangers. Please remember that after school hours, your child is your responsibility. Ensure they are picked up on time. We have open swimming pools and large school grounds where accidents can happen, and our greatest fear is the unthinkable.

The Reality of Child Trafficking

Child trafficking is a growing crisis in South Africa. Reports indicate that between 2018 and 2021, 781 children were documented as trafficking victims, with many more cases likely unreported. In 2022 alone, the National Trafficking Hotline received over 2,400 reports, 20% of which involved children. Traffickers actively seek out vulnerable situations—such as children waiting alone after school—to exploit.

Why After-School Waiting is a Concern

Too many children are left waiting outside schools, sometimes for extended periods, as they wait for parents or transport services that collect from multiple schools. This issue is particularly noticeable at Randpark, where some transport companies arrive much later in the afternoon. While not all transport providers follow this pattern, it remains a concern. We strongly advise parents to ensure their child’s transport service arrives on time to prevent unnecessary waiting.

Steps to Keep Your Child Safe

Make Use of Waiting Classes – We offer supervised waiting classes for children who need to stay at school awaiting older Siblings.

Talk to Your Transport Providers – If your child depends on a transport service, confirm their pickup times. Whenever possible, choose providers who prioritize timely collection to minimize waiting periods.

Educate Your Children About Safety – Teach your children never to talk to strangers, accept rides, or leave the school premises without an approved guardian. Reinforce the importance of staying within the School, and not on the pavements until you or their transport arrives.

Stay Informed and Alert – Keep open communication with other parents, school staff, and transport providers. Report any suspicious activity immediately.

As parents and guardians, we must take every precaution to protect our children. We fully understand that time, traffic, work life all lead to these factors, but lets focus on being on time, and looking after our most precious gifts!
