Study Tips

Helping Your Child Learn, Grow, and Shine

Every child needs support on their learning journey—especially when they’re juggling school, homework, activities, and emotions all at once. As grown-ups, we sometimes think, “They’ve got this!” And while that’s partly true, even confident kids do better when someone’s in their corner.

Here are a few ways you can help your child feel calm, confident, and ready to learn.

1. Make a Study Routine Together

  • Kids do well with routines—they know what to expect and feel more in control.
  • Plan Ahead: Look at what homework or tasks are coming up and make a simple schedule.
  • Break it Down: Big jobs feel easier when they’re in small steps.
  • Keep it Kind: If something doesn’t go to plan, it’s okay. Try again tomorrow.
  •

2. Use Fun Ways to Learn

Learning should be active and enjoyable—not just reading from a book.

  • Teach You: Ask your child to explain something they learned today.
  • Use Pictures: Draw mind maps, use flashcards, or colour-code notes.
  • Try Practice Questions: These help children get used to the types of questions they’ll see.
  •

3. Create a Calm Learning Space

A tidy, quiet space helps children stay focused.

  • Clear the Clutter: Set up a neat table with everything they need.
  • Reduce Distractions: Turn off the TV and keep devices out of reach.
  • Play Soft Music: Some gentle background music can help concentration.
  •

4. Don’t Forget to Rest

Rest is just as important as learning.

  • Take Breaks: A short pause after 25 minutes of work keeps energy levels up.
  • Move Around: A stretch, dance, or walk gives the brain a break.
  • Sleep Well: A good night’s sleep helps children learn and feel better.

5. Talk about Feelings

School can be exciting—but also a little stressful.

  • Check in Often: Ask how they’re feeling about friends, schoolwork, or anything else.
  • Breathe Together: Teach simple breathing exercises to calm the mind.
  • Celebrate the Effort: Praise hard work, not just perfect results.

6. Make Learning Fun

Learning can feel like a game.

  • Play Quizzes: Turn study time into a mini quiz show.
  • Use Apps: There are many learning games and tools online.
  • Give Rewards: A fun treat or outing can be a great motivator.

7. Keep Life Balanced

Kids need time to play, relax, and connect.

  • Try New Things: Let them explore music, sport, or creative hobbies.
  • Family Time Matters: Share meals, tell stories, and have fun together.

8. Be Their Support Team

Children feel braver knowing someone’s always there to help.

  • Study with Friends: Learning with others can make it more fun.
  • Ask for Help: If something is tricky, don’t wait—teachers and tutors can help.
  • Use what’s Out There: Many great resources are available online (see below).

Remember: You Matter Too

Your encouragement, patience, and time make a big difference. From sitting beside them during homework to simply asking about their day, your presence helps your child feel safe and supported.

You don’t have to have all the answers—you just need to show up, cheer them on, and keep going together.
