A Farewell to Our Kaptein

An Interview with Mr. Pienaar

We had the privilege of sitting down with Mr. Pienaar one last time to reflect on his journey, the lessons he has carried, and the legacy he leaves behind.

Career Highlights & Achievements

When asked about his career highlights, Mr. Pienaar smiles and admits there are too many to count. Among them, he recalls building the school year by year with better facilities, finding and nurturing a strong team of teachers, and developing infrastructure such as the computer lab, solar installations, and the sports court (which he fondly calls “his baby”).

But more than the buildings and programs, his greatest achievement has always been the children. Helping to guide them, watching them grow, and walking alongside them in their journeys has been the very heart of his career.

“It’s always been rewarding to see our children grow into wonderful citizens and adults—and knowing I was part of that journey is a feeling no trophy could ever replace.” He feels privileged to have shared that journey not only with the children, but also with their parents, the school, and the wider community—a connection he says has been one of the greatest gifts of his career.

“The expressions on their faces when they see what they’ve achieved—the pride, the joy—that’s my biggest reward. Watching them grow not just academically, but into mature, confident young people, that’s what makes this work so special.”

Why Teaching? Why Principal?

He remembers how much he respected and admired his own teachers for their support and nurturing, and knew he wanted to give back in the same way.

“Teaching is a noble cause. Without teachers, we would not have a society—and I wanted to be part of building that society.”

Becoming a principal, he explains:

“It was demanding, yes—but I loved it. I wanted to be part of shaping young lives, guiding children, and helping them grow into the best versions of themselves. Watching them achieve things they never thought possible has been one of the greatest joys of this role.”

Challenges Along the Way

Like many principals, one of his biggest challenges was always finding and keeping the very best teachers.

“Our teachers run the school. Without their talent, dedication, and love for teaching, the school wouldn’t be the success it is today.”

Another constant challenge, he adds, was shaping children into responsible citizens—helping them make good choices not just for themselves, but for society as a whole.

How Education Has Changed

Education has shifted dramatically over the years. The curriculum has become far more demanding, while discipline and parental involvement have changed significantly.

“Before, it was more of a 50/50 responsibility between school and parents. Now, it feels like 80% falls on the school. Since COVID, many parents have faced stresses like job losses, financial strain, and uncertainty—and that’s placed even more on us. But we must never forget: whatever changes, our children must remain at the centre.”

He adds that while the world may look different, the heart of education hasn’t changed: “Children still need love, guidance, and encouragement. That will never go out of style.”

Funny & Light-Hearted Memories

Of course, it hasn’t all been serious. There have been countless moments of laughter and fun. From school plays where he had to don a tutu and dance to YMCA, to unforgettable camps—like the one where 120 children got food poisoning, and the staff had to buy every box of Imodium in Dundee!

One memory that still makes him chuckle: a colleague once took a flaming shot of Sambuca at a function… and set his beard on fire.

And then there are the children:

“Out of the mouth of babes, the truth comes out. Parents, be careful—our staff often know more about your personal lives than you realise! Be it good or bad, most of it is hilarious, especially when we as adults know the true meaning behind what the child said. And no—we never talk out! But boy oh boy, the innocence and light-heartedness always makes for a good chuckle.”

Best Advice for Parents

“Remember, your children didn’t ask to be here. Do the best you can, even when you have less—less time, less money, less energy. Even when you’re in the middle of a storm, stand strong for your children, put them first, and give your best every day. If today was tough, get up tomorrow, try again, and never give up. You can still be a great parent, no matter the challenges or circumstances you face!

Stand strong. They love you—love them back. Your children are always watching and mimicking you—show them the best version of yourself, and they will grow into the best version of themselves. Do the little things, make time.”

Advice to Staff

“Protect the school’s good name and keep working hard. This isn’t a dead end. No matter what new structure comes in, give the same respect and effort to the new management. Always remember—the real power lies in the classroom. The kids adore you, and you deserve that. I could not be prouder of all of you.”

Life After Retirement

The first plan is simple: rest.

“I’ll take a few months to relax, ride my bike, and build and play with my radio-controlled cars. Who knows what the future holds—but it’s bright.”

How He Hopes to Be Remembered

“As a go-getter, principled, and passionate. Passionate about our school, our staff, and our children. This has always been a job in the business of people—our kids, our staff, our parents. Most importantly, I hope I’m remembered for standing with pride for our children, parents, and community.”

And, with a smile, he adds:

“I loved it – thank you for all the support over the years! It’s been my honour to serve! (P.S. Pick up the litter!)”

Farewell

Thank you, Kaptein. You leave behind a legacy of an amazing school, hard work, pride, love, laughter, and above all—children whose lives are brighter because of you. You will be deeply missed.
